The chip shot! oh no not a chip shot!, that's the sort of thought that goes through the mind of the beginner golfer in particular, as they probably face this shot more often than the low handicap golfer.

You have just hit a good drive and a good second but messed up the next to finish just 5 to 10 feet short of the green, now some times we are lucky and we can use the old "Texas Wedge" as the path to the green is smooth, but what if it isn't, your in a fluffy lie and the ball is sitting down, we have to consider playing the chip.

Which brings us to another side of the game, Mental Golf it's when playing these little shots that we have got to have a really positive attitude about the shot.

The best way to develop a positive attitude to playing the chip shot is to practice, practice and practice and in the end it will be well worth the effort as you will cut quite a number of shots from your score.

What club should you use?

That really depends on how the ball is lying, the clubs used most often tend to be the 7,8 or 9 iron personally depending on how far I am from the hole I will use the 7 or the 9 iron you should select whatever club you feel comfortable with and practice with it until you have mastered the technique.

Another important aspect of this shot is visualisation, try and visualise where you want the ball to finish you should get on the green every time initially you may not get as close as you would like but with practice your technique and accuracy will improve, remember visualisation is important and not just for chip shots!!

How to make the chip shot

Here are a few tips on the setup for the chip shot, its not rocket science and it does take practice.

1 Get your club and and line up the target line

2 Make sure your weight is evenly distributed and your stance is open,ie your front foot and your shoulders are pointing to the hole.

3 Don't grip the club to tight, lightly but solid.

4 Pick where you want the ball to land.( Visualise )

5 Keep your wrists firm and draw the club back keeping it low to the ground.

6 Keep your lower body still only using your shoulders in the turn.

7 Keep your eye on the ball and check that it lands on the spot you aimed for.

8 Keep practising.
